My paintings explore nature through a draftsman's eye. As a trained architect and self-taught painter, I initially observe the world and organize my visual field from a linear perspective. At the same time, I am attracted to the unruliness of organic forms. My work experiments with dual influences, without imposing the need to either choose between or reconcile differences. It is the interplay between these two realms that creates a dynamic, yet complementary "map" of nature. I use simple materials - acrylic paints, graphite pencils and rulers - to create complex, layered paintings. Expanses of translucent paint are interrupted by hard and soft lines. Images surface and recede, blur and sharpen. This technique creates a vivid dialogue between the two media. Although my work may begin with external images, it is also highly reflective of my internal landscape. Through this personal process, the visual complexity of the outer world joins with my emotional aspiration to maintain an inner sense of balance and calm. As an artist, I am stimulated and motivated by exploring the oscillations between the linear and the organic in the physical world, and between inner and outer experiences.
